So farewell The Durrells after ITV’s triumphantly successful first series…

Louisa didn’t marry Sven because he turned out to be gay. But they had the party anyway. Author Larry ditched his girlfriend to stay with his dysfunctional family in Corfu... and Gerry returned all of his animals to the wild.

An upbeat ending. This sun-kissed ratings winner will of course be back. Are you pleased about that? Was this happy snappy tale of loveable ex-pat Brits abroad perfect for a Sunday night? Or too light and trite for your liking? Tell us what you think.

I thought it was great Sunday evening telly. Did shed a little tear at the end, that is until the announcer informed the viewers that The Durrells WILL be back for a second series. Great! Keeley Hawes should get a Bafta neXT year. (Line of duty and The Durrells)

As the sun set on the first series of The Durrells, Sunday evening will be missing an hour of pure escapism.

The six part drama based on the magical story of the young Gerald Durrell and his family on the Greek island of Corfu in the 1930s. The animal-obsessed ten year old decided against letting his collection of birds, reptiles and mammals free in the final episode, paving the way for the second series which is being filmed this summer.

Louisa, played by Keeley Hawes, called off the wedding when she discovered that Sven was gay. She rifled through his drawers to find some intimate photographs of the handsome goat herder with other men. But we didn’t know much about him in the first place and when he declared a lack of interest in sex before marriage, alarm bells started to ring. I was always routing for Spiro, but I think he already has a wife.

“We decided we want to do it soon because it’s romantic and fun,” said Louisa, who realised Sven was trying to get the ceremony over with.

The family threw a party anyway. Margo persuaded the agoraphobic Countess to leave her palatial mansion and kick up her heels.

The eldest Larry decided not to move out with his girlfriend and she went back on the boat to Blighty. Leslie was relieved that his mother didn’t re marry and returned to his favourite pastime… guns and shooting.

In an age where almost everyone is more interested in their iPads and Xboxes, I’m already missing this enchanting drama.
