What an ingenious idea. Give families their benefits in one lump sum and let them roll with it. I did fear it would be spent on frivolites  but apart from a play station for Tony and Diane's son and a fearful racoon what did they do wrong..really?

The Great British Benefits Handout

I stumbled upon The Great British Benefits Handout last year and found it strangely compelling. What an ingenious idea. Give families their benefits in one lump sum and let them roll with it. I did fear it would be spent on frivolites but apart from a play station for Tony and Diane's son and a fearful racoon what did they do wrong..really?

I would think if you are a long term benefit claimant it takes guts to sign off and step into the perilous unknown, and a giant leap of faith, a stuffed briefcase or not and to their credit they did leap which is why I looked forward to the follow up last week which I once again stumbled upon.

Tony and Diane are plodding on. Diane is a grafter, I give her that and Tony is an effervescent, bubbly guy whose enthusiasm and positivity is infectious which can't be easy after years in a negative situation. Yeah, they've made mistakes but who hasn't in their first years of self employment? As for the reptile man he's proving all the doubters wrong. He has a dream he's pursuing it and employing others to boot. I can't knock him for that.

I'm not on benefits but I do think many of these people could shine if given the same chance. Yeah they'll be the odd one that falls by the wayside but why not let long term unemployed be given the same opportunity? Their confidence and self esteem are at an all time low. Many just need a leg up and someone to believe in them.
Well done all at Channel 5. Keep it up!
