Samantha Morton and Tim Roth in Rillington Place

By terry1949

Some programmes are both compelling and yet harrowing to watch, Rillington Place was one of these.

In an chilling atmosphere of malice we were introduced to Christie and Ethel from the time they moved into London and his horrible crimes began to gather a pace.

The script suggested these crimes rather then showing them in graphic detail , the sight of Ethel coming home to see Christie digging away in the garden was outwardly quite innocent until you realised what was under the earth he was digging.

Tim Roth brings his considerable talent to the role of Christie a liar with a long string of convictions who managed for a number of years to hide his sexual perversions under a cloak of respectability as a wounded war veteran and an officer of the law. Although some may find the "mumbling" used in this production difficult but I feel that certainly in Christies case the low level whisper like quality adds to the menace of the production.

How Christie managed to hide the appalling truth from those around him, not least Ethel his thankless wife played so well by Samantha Morton, is amazing to me but sadly it is quite true. I was left feeling a sympathy for Ethel as slowly this nightmare began to surface.

Though Rillington Place is an uncomfortable story to watch I, for one, will be keeping Tuesday evenings reserved for the next fortnight to see this drama unfold.
