Strictly Come Dancing (BBC1, 6.55pm) Calm down from the white hot excitement of TV Kev on Pointless Celebrities by watching proper stars waddle around on the dance floor. They keep telling us that this will be the week that former cha cha Chancellor Ed Balls will go. Bet he doesn’t.

The X Factor (ITV, 8pm) As the singing contest that time forgot trundles on thrill to the fifth live show and watch the woeful wannabes struggling to survive. Plus, pensioner know-nothing judges and witless host Dermot O’Leary’s dad dancing. The weekend stops here.

SUNDAY

The Next Great Magician (ITV, 7pm) Another deeply average entertainment unspectacular hosted by Stephen Mulhern. This time he shares the burden with trainee presenter Rochelle Humes. Out of six professional magician hopefuls only one will make the grand finale. And the winner gets his own ITV special. Which not many people will watch. After one series, hey presto it’ll be gone.

Planet Earth II (BBC1, 8pm) Ten years after the landmark wildlife series Planet Earth, TV’s most endurable star Sir David Attenborough proudly presents the sensational sequel. An astonishing production packed with the wonders of the natural world. Especially the remarkable penguins. Quite simply must-see TV.
