Flying to the Ends of the Earth
SATURDAY
1966: A Nation Remembers (ITV, 9pm) Yeah, a nation vaguely remembers when the English football team actually won something. An inspirational look back at the World Cup tournament that energised the UK and ended in England’s famous triumph over West Germany. Includes interviews with the players, spectators and even the Irish students who operated Wembley Stadium’s scoreboard during our finest sporting hour. Those were the days. Now we can’t even beat Iceland.
Britain’s Favourite Superhero (Channel 4, 7.30pm) An important 90 minute countdown to the nation’s number one superhero. Batman, the X-Men, Spider Man and even Super Gran are all in the running as a poll reveals who we like the most. Loads of blockbuster Hollywood film clips, lots of fun.
SUNDAY
Flying To The Ends Of The Earth (Channel 4, 8pm) Former Royal Marine Arthur Williams takes the plane to the coldest settlement on Earth. As he says, you don’t go to Siberia… you get sent there. A dazzling documentary featuring a real-life helicopter crash and the world’s largest man-made hole, which will take your breath away. The fact that, after an accident eight years ago, Arthur is confined to a wheelchair is barely mentioned. Amazing man, amazing programme. Don’t miss it.
Dragons’ Den (BBC2, 9pm) Among tonight’s nervous wannabe entrepreneurs hoping for investment is a desperado pitching “wearable maps”. Good luck with that. But could an interference-free guitar cable spell the end to rock bands’ crackle and hum misery? Tune in and find out.
The Secret Agent (BBC1, 9pm) The conclusion of a three part adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s classic novel as the Greenwich Observatory is bombed and poor Winnie learns the shocking truth about her husband Verloc.
