Coronation Street. The plots sicken

Super-sleuth Michael Rodwell and Tweety-Bird lookalike Pat Phelan

Deep in the through-the-looking-glass fantasy land they call Coronation Street the anorexically thin plots are losing credibility faster than David Platt in a runaway car.

In the worst storyline of the year, airhead Maria is in jail on a murder rap. An unusual state of affairs considering there’s no body. But of course there are those incriminating scissors that crazy Caz coated in blood, the ones Maria left at home while she was at the salon presumably cutting hair with her fingers.

EastEnders: showdown for Whitney and Lee

So mad Masood’s finally going. After crashing through the credibility barrier many years ago, the problem plagued postie is taking his kid to a third world country “for a better life”. Good luck with that.

In fairness to the pub-loving Muslim, anywhere is better than Albert Square’s seething cesspit of semi-human horror. Especially now that appalling thug Phil Mitchell is back in town. They get our hopes up… and then he doesn’t die. Damn.

I’m A Celeb. So far so average but Extra Camp breaks new ground in awfulness

Carol Voderman is impressed by Joel Dommett's way with numbers

Nothing much to say about this year’s jungle heroes. So far so average. An annoyingly nice bunch of people who are all getting on famously. Which is the last thing we want.

But it’s always good to see a new face on television. Especially Carol Vorderman’s. What the hell’s happened to her? Epic amounts of surgery? Industrial quantities of Botox? Or has she discovered the secret of eternal youth? You decide.

Strictly Come Dancing. Welcome to The Ed Balls Show

Resident carthorse Ed Balls

“All I want to do is dance on that Blackpool floor,” gasped Daisy Lowe at the start of a decisive weekend that you just knew would end in her elimination. And, sure enough, it did. When Strictly’s desperadoes beg for their survival it never happens.

No begging required for resident carthorse Ed Balls who goes from weakness to weakness but remains the undisputed star of the show. For a former Chancellor of the Exchequer, being loved by the public must be a novel experience. But love him they undoubtedly do and he waltzes inexorably on.

Johnson Beharry with Bill Speakman on Whitehall. Both men were awarded the Victoria Cross

By Andy Simon @AndySimon55

It's not entertainment, nor is it a drama. The BBC's broadcast of the Remembrance Sunday service at the cenotaph in Whitehall, London, is for me at least, a humbling thing to watch.

For the most part; it is a time for me to feel gratitude, to give thanks and to show appreciation for those who gave their lives in the service of their country primarily during the two world wars.

And times have indeed changed, have they not?

The Next Great Magician

By Matthew Gormley @MatthewPGormley

The Next Great Magician is ITV’s latest in a long line of talent shows. Singing, ice skating, even diving have all been tried and tested, and it’s hard to believe producers are still coming up with new activities to milk the reality format for all it’s worth. Splash! sank without trace after two series and The X Factor has been dying a slow and painful death for at least the last eight years, so I wasn’t holding out much hope.

Rick Stein discovers there's more to Lisbon than chicken piri piri

England v Scotland World Cup 2018 Qualifier (ITV, 7.15pm) Useless England lost to Iceland so they should be eminently capable of storming to defeat against old rival Scotland. If the football’s not bad enough, brace yourself for Glenn Hoddle’s grammatically challenged punditry. Plus, inane analysis from Ryan Giggs, Lee Dixon, Ally McCoist and Ian Wright. Probably best to just turn the sound down.
