Claire Foy and Matt Smith in The Crown

The Crown (Netflix from today) TV’s £100million drama about Her Maj and her dysfunctional royal family. Starring Claire Foy as the Queen and former Doctor Who Matt Smith as her hilarious husband Prince Philip. They’re banking on the global appeal of Buckingham Palace’s eternal soap opera to pull in huge audiences all over the world. But will this expensive gamble pay off?

Joanne Froggatt in Dark Angel

The problem with trying to cram the gruesome life of a prolific murderer into two neat television episodes is there simply isn’t enough time.

ITV’s Dark Angel seemed like a promising drama. The true story of Britain’s first female serial killer Mary Ann Cotton who ploughed her way through as many as 21 victims. Intriguing. I was looking forward to it.

Kate Humble and a polar bear in Arctic Live

Even breathless Kate Humble’s legendary enthusiasm isn’t enough to save BBC2’s boring Arctic Live from being a drab TV wasteland.

Here she is standing around in her woolly grey hat with a vast white wilderness disappearing into the distance behind her. As television shots go, it’s a dreary disaster.

As is Canada’s forlorn frozen town of Churchill, a relentlessly bleak-looking outpost that has one thing going for it. Lots of polar bears. Majestic creatures which Kate promises us we can see – drum roll – live!

This Time Next Year with Davina McCall

This Time Next Year (ITV, 8pm) New show with a highly compelling format as various people make personal pledges about what they want to achieve in the next 12 months. Can overweight Sarah Jane lose ten stone? Will out-of-shape Jodie become a competitive body builder? Find out in the time it takes host Davina McCall to walk from one door to another. Sadly, they don’t all succeed.

Mary Anne (Joanne Froggat, right) plays merry havoc with Victorian Sunderland’s menfolk

Over the years, our world has seen its fair share of murderous women. For example; there was Lizzie Borden, who was the top suspect regarding the rather gruesome murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts in August 1892.

Then there was Genene Jones, a rather charming (Not) serial killer who murdered up to 46 infants and children whilst working as a pediatric nurse in Texas between 1971 & 1984.

What a little love.

Collared polar bears in The Arctic Live

The Arctic Live (BBC2, 8pm) Stand by for live shots of breathless hosts Kate Humble and Simon Reeve proudly presenting pre-recorded footage of the spectacular frozen North. Our TV heroes are in Churchill, Canada to witness the start of the local polar bears’ winter hunt. If this three part series anything like calamity Kate’s disastrous Airport Live it’ll be hilariously bad. Fingers crossed.
