Celebrity Masterchef: Simon Webbe

Celebrity MasterChef… the competition continues. And Gregg Wallace asks superannuated boy bander Simon Webbe: “We met before on Strictly. The question is are you going to last longer cooking than I did dancing?” Answer: No.

Poor Gregg. Still in denial about why he was the first out of Strictly’s class of 2014. Yes, his two left feet were a factor. But the Beeb’s ballroom blitz is a popularity contest. If you’re not popular you get your marching orders PDQ. Hence Wallace’s extremely speedy departure.

EastEnders (BBC1, 7pm) Blackmail victim Les Coker struggles to find the money to buy the inappropriately named Babe’s silences and collapses from stress. Unfortunately for the cross dressing undertaker, he’s in full Christine mode when they find him. I love this stupid storyline. Do you?

Matt LeBlanc and Chris Evans

The word is that Matt LeBlanc has threatened to quit Top Gear unless Chris Evans is fired. No denials so far from the BBC. So it could well be true.

Certainly, the gruesome twosome don’t exactly exude on-screen chemistry. And, it would seem, they’re far from friends when the cameras stop rolling.

According to the latest reports, nice guy Matt isn’t a fan of the “rude and frosty” way Chris treats the staff. The angry American is said to have delivered an ultimatum to Beeb bosses: Either he goes…. or I do.

England squad

England v Iceland (ITV, 7.15pm) On paper, mighty England should beat tiny Iceland with consummate ease. On grass, who knows? But whatever happens in Nice, please God don’t let it go to penalties. Fingers crossed for the right result as Peter Crouch and his teeth swap inanities with fellow prattling pundits Ian Wright and Lee Dixon. Talking of inanities, Glenn “them pliers” Hoddle’s brave battle with grammar and syntax continues apace.

Another explosive week in Emmerdale

Over to the country idyll where the philandering GP was viciously beaten up after his marriage collapsed because he was having an affair with a teenager. Van girl Victoria was attacked by a drugs dealer. And the rural rabble were all set for yet another inferno. Just a routine week in the village of the damned.

Not only is Emmerdale a terrifyingly dangerous place to live, it’s also the most combustible hellhole on Earth. It’s always on fire.

Mark Strephan and Ben Tavassoli in New Blood

By Henrietta Knight

In the summer TV doldrums, the BBC has passed the Thursday evening drama baton from Peaky Blinders to the excellent New Blood.

While all ITV has to offer is repeats of tired old Vera, iPlayer presents a different kind of thriller set in the sunshine of India and London. Writer Anthony Horowitch said he wanted to inject some fun back into the crime genre after several series of serious Nordic Noir.
